The upperparts are blue-grey and the underparts white to ochre or rusty-red in colour, depending on the subspecies. There are large white spots on the uppertail coverts, which are always reddish brown. The Eurasian nuthatch has a black eye stripe. The cheeks and throat are white. The iris is black and the legs are orange-yellow.
